Rising Heat Pump Installations Highlight Growing Demand for Heat Loss Assessors

Share

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has released its latest quarterly statistics on retrofit heat pump installations, providing the most comprehensive view yet of installation trends across the UK.

As the transition to low-carbon heating accelerates, the data shows sustained increases in heat pump uptake in existing domestic properties, alongside a clear signal that demand for skilled assessors is set to rise.

What’s in the Latest DESNZ Publication?

DESNZ has expanded its methodology to create a unified measure of total retrofit heat pump installations, moving beyond previous reports that focused solely on Government-funded schemes.

This updated approach uses MCS-certified installation data, removes new-build and non-domestic systems, and matches records using EPC data and UPRN address matching. This ensures the dataset focuses exclusively on domestic retrofit installations across the UK.

As a result, the figures now provide a far more accurate benchmark for tracking real-world progress in heat pump deployment across the UK.

Latest Figures Show Consistent Demand

The latest figures (Q4 2025) highlight continued expansion in the market:

  • 51,886 retrofit installations in 2025, marking a 7% increase from 2024
  • Installations are now over 4.5 times higher than in 2020
  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) dominate, accounting for 99% of installs (up from 92% in 2020)

Regional leaders include:

Region % Share of Installations
South East of England 15%
South West of England 14%
Wales 12%

Significant regional development is also evident, with installations increasing by 1,881% in London and 689% in Wales between 2020 and 2025.

These figures demonstrate clear market momentum but also point to a growing need for qualified professionals to support delivery.

What This Means for Elmhurst Members

For Elmhurst Energy, this data helps inform the development of training, software, and guidance, ensuring assessors are equipped to meet the increasing demand.

The continued growth in heat pump installations provides an opportunity for energy assessors to upskill and further their careers. As heat pump installations increase, so does demand for EPCs, retrofit assessments and heat loss calculations.

As heat pumps become more widely used as a low-carbon heating solution, heat loss calculations are quickly becoming a core competency within the retrofit space, ensuring low carbon heating systems are sized correctly. This drives demand for qualified professionals who can support optimised and compliant installations.

Assessors who can deliver this service are better positioned to support installers and homeowners effectively, improve system performance and compliance, and provide access to more consistent and higher-value work.

Upskill Now: Become a Heat Loss Assessor

To meet this growing demand, Elmhurst Energy offers dedicated Heat Loss Assessor Training, designed to equip professionals with the skills required to effectively size low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps.
