Green Careers Week 2025: Elmhurst’s Top 5 Green Upskills for Members

Share

As Green Careers Week kicks off, professionals across the energy efficiency and retrofit and sectors have a fresh opportunity to reflect on how they can future-proof their careers and get ahead in a changing industry. At Elmhurst, we believe that this moment is exactly the right time to invest in your skills. Elmhurst’s Great Green Upskill initiative directly supports Green Careers Week and aims to give our accredited members access to the training, knowledge and confidence they need to stay ahead in a fast-moving industry.

Below, we highlight the top 5 upskills we recommend for our members right now.

1. Retrofit Assessor

The shift to whole-house retrofit is at the heart of the UK’s net-zero housing agenda. As a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA), you can take your career further by becoming a Retrofit Assessor – a role in high demand as PAS 2035 projects grow. Through The Great Green Upskill, members can access our Retrofit Assessor, On Demand course (10 hours CPD) with a 40% discount.

  • Why this matters: Retrofit assessments are the start of all retrofit projects and provide good data and information for Retrofit Coordinators to put together a retrofit plan.
  • Who it’s for: Qualified DEAs looking to move into retrofit and keen to offer more services
  • What you’ll gain: Practical competence in retrofit assessment and ongoing support past your training

2. Heat Loss Assessor

As low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps, become more widespread, accurately understanding the heat loss of a building is increasingly critical. Our on Demand, Heat Loss Assessor course (10 hours CPD) is part of the Great Green Upskill offering and is currently 40% off for members.

  • Why this matters: Heat loss calculations are crucial for ensuring proper sizing of heat pumps and other heating systems in accordance with the standards of BS EN12831, leading to improved efficiency and overall heating system performance.
  • Who it’s for: Particularly important for Retrofit Assessors and DEAs wanting to diversify and other industry professionals (Building Surveyors, Air Testers, Installers etc) looking for a technical edge.
  • What you’ll gain: Skills to perform detailed heat-loss calculations, enhance service offerings and align with emerging regulatory and market requirements.

3. Older & Traditional Buildings

Following the latest update to PAS 2035, all professionals working on retrofit projects involving pre-1919 properties or traditional construction (such as solid brick or stone) must now hold a Level 3 qualification in Older and Traditional Buildings, in addition to their Retrofit Assessor or Retrofit Coordinator accreditation. Our On Demand, Older & Traditional Buildings course (ABBE Level 3 Qualification) is available at a 40% discount for Elmhurst members under The Great Green Upskill.

  • Why this matters: Working on old or heritage buildings requires specialist knowledge of fabric, ventilation, materials and retrofit constraints. Being competent in this area allows you to effectively work on these projects.
  • Who it’s for: Retrofit Assessors and Coordinators looking to work on pre-1919 properties or other retrofit professionals looking to broaden their knowledge.
  • What you’ll gain: ABBE Level 3 Qualification and the confidence to safely and effectively assess and work on older and traditional buildings

4. Measured Energy Performance (MEP) Training

Understanding how a building actually performs, rather than simply how it is modelled or assumed to be, is becoming essential. Our Measured Energy Performance (MEP) training gives you the tools to measure real-world building performance and join the Elmhurst MEP competency scheme.

  • Why this matters: With the industry placing increasing emphasis on performance gap reduction, on-site measurement and verification are becoming key differentiators in the market.
  • Who it’s for: Ideal for assessors working across the existing, new build and retrofit markets who are looking to better understand the performance of buildings and expand their service offering.
  • What you’ll gain: The ability to offer MEP services, build new revenue streams and join a scheme that signals professional credibility and real value to clients.

5. Introduction to Energy Efficiency & Retrofit in Homes (New Entrants/Support Roles)

For those are new to the industry, or working within in sales, administration, or advisor roles, our “Introduction to Energy Efficiency & Retrofit in Homes” course is ideal. This course provides and overview of the industry and how it functions but doesn’t include any in-depth technical knowledge. Operational admins or members accredited with Elmhurst can access a 40% discount on this course for their staff members.

  • Why this matters: Upskilling isn’t just for existing professionals. Ensuring your whole team is knowledgeable and confident in answering basic questions strengthens your reputation and enhances customer service.
  • Who it’s for: Anyone new to the industry or sales, admin and advisory roles within your team
  • What you’ll gain: A solid grounding in the principles of retrofit and energy efficiency and an understanding of the market.
