Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor training course provides a fantastic opportunity to gain competency in heat loss calculations where you can accurately size heat pumps or other heating systems.

In this on demand course, you’ll discover the importance of heat loss calculations for new heating systems. The course covers an overview of BS 12831, detailed steps of how to calculate heat loss, key elements to include in a technical survey, practical use of the Elmhurst Heat Loss Calculator and more.

This course is suitable for Qualified Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs), Retrofit Assessors, Airtightness Testers or anyone with an interest in carrying out Heat Loss Assessments which could include, Installers or Building Surveyors.

This course is comprised of 8 modules (outlined below) delivered on demand, allowing you to access and complete it at your own pace, whenever and wherever you choose. There are short tests following each module and after the final module, there is a final test case scenario that must be completed and passed.

Once you successfully complete the course, you will be eligible to join Elmhurst’s Heat Loss Assessor Competency Scheme.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites must be met before booking/attending this course:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must possess ‘Basic IT Skills’ (as outlined below)
  • You must have access to a PC or Laptop

What is heat loss calculation and what are the different types of heat loss in a dwelling.

How to create a floor plan, the required equipment, and how to accurately measure and record all the elements required for a heat loss calculation.

How to identify and document property information, such as the location data associated with the property, property ages, airtightness, and thermal performance.

What is ventilation and why is it required. What are the different ventilation types in a dwelling, ventilation zones and shelter factors.

What is a heated room and what are the desired internal temperatures.

Module 6.1 – Building Elements Part 1: An overview of building elements, including U- vales and wall types.

Module 6.2 – Building Elements Part 2: An overview of additional building elements, including floor, ceiling, door and window types.

Detailing adjacencies for walls, floors and ceilings, and ventilation devices and air volume.

An explanation of the results generated from the calculation and how to import and export a JSON file.
