Overheating Training
Learn how to assess the overheating risk for buildings using Design Simulation Modelling (DSM).
The government is concerned about the risk of overheating, particularly in new buildings, which is why the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has introduced a new Building Regulation making it a legal requirement for developers to provide Building Control Bodies with evidence to show they have reduced the risk of overheating. An Overheating Risk Assessment will be required for new buildings in England when the new Building Regulations come into force in June 2022.
Training routes
Learn how to provide Overheating Assessments by attending a 1-day training course.

Overheating Training
**(IMPORTANT)** Suitable for: Those who have experience of using either IES or DesignBuilder for Dynamic Simulation or have completed the DesignBuilder or IES pre-course on demand training.
Course Length: 1 DAY
Cost: £250 + VAT
This 1-day online course will give you the knowledge you need to confidently use TM52 and TM59 overheating tools in either Design Builder or IES.
Joining Elmhurst's Overheating Competency Scheme Upon completion of the course you will be required to successfully complete and submit a competency assessment in order to join Elmhurst’s Overheating Competency Scheme. |

Overheating Training with Dynamic Simulation Training
Suitable for: Those who have not previously completed a Dynamic Simulation training course.
Course Length: Pre course training modules (equates to 21 hours) plus 1 day Overheating courseCost: £600 + VAT - must be purchased together with 1 day Overheating training course (non-refundable)
This course includes the pre-requisite for joining the Overheating training course. You will learn the fundaments of how to use the DesignBuilder or IES software, giving you the necessary skills to proceed to the Overheating course. When purchased through Elmhurst the learning modules will be available for 1 year.
Course completion Upon completion of both courses you will be required to successfully complete and submit a competency assessment in order to join Elmhurst’s Overheating Competency Scheme. |
Why complete Overheating training?
Overheating in buildings is becoming more of a problem due to increased levels of air tightness, higher levels of insulation, excessive glazing and inadequate ventilation. But it's not just about comfort; the ill effects of overheating can lead to heat exhaustion, hospitalisation and in some cases death.
Required for compliance
All new buildings in England, Wales and Scotland currently require an overheating risk calculation within the SAP assessment used for Building Regulations, however…
When the new Building Regulations come into force in June 2022, overheating will be taken out of Part L and out of SAP assessments. Many On Construction Domestic Energy Assessors already are familiar with the challenges of overheating however as this is removed from SAP and Part L this part of their role will change.
A new Building Regulation will be created and supported by the new Approved Document O. For high risk buildings such as apartment blocks it is likely that dynamic simulation modelling (DSM) will be required to show that overheating has been mitigated. Although this is new to Building Regulations, many Local Authorities already require the use of DSM to meet regional planning conditions).

As someone who has received specialist training in dynamic thermal analysis, you will be able to model different strategies to reduce the risk of overheating and provide a comprehensive service alongside SAP and SBEM assessments.
