Why CPD Courses Matter More Than Ever

Share

The energy efficiency market is moving quickly. New regulations, new methodologies, and higher client expectations are changing what good practice looks like across domestic, non-domestic and retrofit work. In this environment, relying on what you already know can narrow your options just when the market is opening up.

This is why it pays to invest in your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). CPD is the ongoing process of maintaining and developing the knowledge, skills and competence needed to carry out your role to a consistently high standard. For Elmhurst members, it is a mandatory requirement of membership, reflecting its critical role in protecting the quality, credibility and professionalism of our industry.

Although CPD is mandatory for Elmhurst members, it shouldn’t be treated as a box-ticking exercise. 39% of current core skill sets will be completely outdated by 2030 due to rapid technological and green-economy shifts which means that members who invest in their knowledge now will be the ones best placed to win work, inspire confidence, and grow their earning potential later. Done properly, your CPD is a practical way to stay ahead of change, improve the service you give customers, and position yourself for new and emerging areas of work.

The Best Time to Invest in Your CPD is Now

New regulations in areas such as Future Homes, EPC reform and MEES are raising the bar for competence and increasing expectations of your clients. The direction of travel is clear: higher standards, greater scrutiny, and stronger demand for people who can demonstrate current, credible expertise. If you want to stay relevant and competitive, now is the time to act. As standards rise and expectations shift, the quality of your service depends on the strength of your knowledge. CPD helps you understand what is changing, apply it in practice, and identify where new opportunities are emerging. In a market shaped by change, learning is not a distraction from growing your business; it is one of the clearest ways to support it.

When you stay actively engaged in CPD, you are better prepared to understand how new regulations affect your business, reduce the risk of avoidable errors, and explain assessments and advice clearly and professionally to your customers. Continued learning also puts you in a stronger position to diversify, adapt and stay relevant as policy, technology and customer expectations evolve. That might mean deepening your expertise in an area you already work in or identifying a natural progression into a new discipline.

Not all CPD is Equal

Not all CPD delivers the same value, which is why taking a considered approach matters. By stepping back to understand where your strengths lie and where new opportunities may be emerging, you can choose CPD that genuinely supports your business’ development. All Elmhurst CPD is certified so you can have confidence that the learning is relevant, robust and aligned with recognised standards. Uncertified, or self‑directed CPD, can still play an important role, but it relies on you to assess its relevance, track it accurately and won’t be counted against your required annual CPD requirement.

Elmhurst Energy supports members with the tools to plan, record and manage their CPD effectively through our CPD log, helping you keep track of requirements, evidence learning, and reflect on progress throughout the year. This can also help members avoid one of the biggest mistakes we see members make: leaving CPD until the final months of the year and then trying to complete all of it in one go. While that may satisfy your requirement on paper, it often limits the real value you get from the learning. Trying to absorb ten or more hours of content at once can lead to cognitive fatigue, weaker retention, and very little practical application afterwards. A better approach is to spread your CPD across the year, revisit key ideas at sensible intervals, and actively apply what you learn to your everyday work as you learn it. Our Next Level Training campaign is here to make gaining your CPD easier and cheaper, with 10% off selected courses that are will help to up your CPD hours and futureproof your career by taking your service offering to the next level.

Training manager, Josh Wakeling comments:

“CPD is a requirement of membership, but that is only the starting point. The real value lies in what it enables you to become: more current, more capable, more confident and more useful to your clients. In a market that’s defined by change, this matters. Our members who treat CPD as an investment rather than an obligation are the ones best placed to adapt to regulatory reform, expand into new services, and build resilient businesses for the future. If you want your CPD to do more than fill a logbook, now is the time to begin.”
