Government's Clean Energy Plan - A Boost for Retrofit and Skills

Share

Elmhurst Energy is pleased to see the Government’s latest Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan, launched by Secretary of State Ed Miliband, which sets out a bold vision for the UK’s clean energy future.

The plan puts a strong focus on retrofit, low-carbon heating, and workforce development. Elmhurst has taken a look at the plan and what this means for industry.

Retrofit and low-carbon heating

The plan references the recently confirmed £13.2 billion investment in the Warm Homes Plan, which will support the rollout of energy efficiency upgrades and technologies like heat pumps. This is a big step forward for the retrofit industry and should give much needed confidence to our industry.

There’s also continued support for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, offering grants of up to £7,500 for heat pump installations, and the introduction of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism, which aims to encourage manufacturers to shift towards cleaner heating solutions.

These policies are a welcome sign that retrofit is recognised as a key part of the UK’s net zero journey.

Skills and training

One of the most encouraging parts of the plan is the upcoming Clean Energy Workforce Strategy, expected later this summer. It promises to tackle skills shortages across the energy sector. The Government has also extended the Heat Training Grant, which has already helped train over 10,000 professionals, and is investing in Technical Excellence Colleges to support practical skills development.

There’s even talk of expanding the Energy Skills Passport, which could help workers move more easily between sectors, something we know is vital for a smooth transition.

Andrew Parkin, Technical Development Director at Elmhurst, commented:

“This is a really positive plan that shows the Government is serious about clean energy and retrofit. It’s great to see investment in both the supply chain and the people who’ll deliver it. We’ll continue to work closely with policymakers to make sure energy assessment, retrofit and training remain at the heart of the transition.”
