Elmhurst’s APEL Non-Domestic Energy Assessor (NDEA) course offers a fast track training route for those with experience of working in the non-domestic sector, who want to gain expert knowledge in the production of SBEM Calculations and EPCs for new and existing (Level 3 and 4) commercial buildings.
If professionals meet the APEL requirements, the two day NDEA APEL course provides individuals with all the information needed to meet the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) standards for a NDEA Assessor. The training is accompanied by distance learning materials and is followed by an assessment of five SBEM calculations.

Please note that the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) application form will be emailed to you once payment for the course has been successfully processed. To secure your place on the course, it is essential that you complete and return the APEL application form as soon as possible. Failure to submit the completed form at least one week before the course start date may result in your place being forfeited. Upon successful completion of the NDEA APEL training and your portfolio, individuals are classed as qualified. Once qualified you will be eligible to join Elmhurst’s government approved accreditation scheme free of charge.
General Requirement
Applicants must have worked within the Non-Domestic sector and possess at least 2 years of relevant experience within the last 5 years
To ensure successful participation in the course, we strongly recommend that applicants have:
- Prior experience in energy assessment and energy auditing of commercial buildings.
- Familiarity with SBEM and/or DSM methodologies, including the use of government-approved software tools such as:
- iSBEM
- Elmhurst’s SBEM Online
- DesignBuilder
- IES
- Working knowledge of Part L of the Building Regulations and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with building services, particularly in relation to HVAC systems.
