With over 30 years of experience, our industry-recognised green skill courses equip learners, locally and country wide, with the skills and knowledge required to excel in the energy assessment industry.

What Green Skills Training Courses Do Elmhurst Offer?

Elmhurst specialises in providing the following qualification courses across the UK, available in a variety of delivery methods to suit your needs. These include:

  • In-person, classroom based learning delivered by expert trainers at our head office (Lutterworth) or a location that suits you
  • Remote online delivery by our expert trainers, via Zoom or Microsoft Teams
  • On Demand learning for flexibility to study when and where it suits you

Introduction to Energy Efficiency and Retrofit in Homes

This on demand course provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of energy efficiency and home retrofitting, making it perfect for those interested in the rapidly expanding EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) and retrofit industry in the UK. A Level 3 ABBE Qualification is also optional with this course.

Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA) Training

This Level 3 ABBE qualification course equips learners with skills to assess the energy efficiency of existing homes in the UK and issue valid Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).

Retrofit Assessor Training

Successful completion of this course will allow delegates to deliver the initial retrofit assessment required at the beginning of each retrofit project. This includes delivery of an energy assessment, condition report and occupancy assessment.

Retrofit Coordinator Training

This Level 5 ABBE qualification course will ensure delegates can manage the full end-to-end delivery of UK retrofit projects in house. Producing the necessary improvement plans and reports needed in accordance with government funded schemes such as ECO and WH:SHF.

Older and Traditional Buildings Training

Elmhurst’s ABBE Level 3 Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings course equips learners with the skills needed to perform retrofit assessments on older buildings according to PAS 2035 and PAS 2038 standards. This role serves a growing market, with older buildings making up about a quarter of all structures in the UK.

Why are these roles important?

Improving UK building stock: The UK has some of the worst-performing buildings in Europe. To achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, it is estimated that approximately 29 million homes need significant energy efficiency improvements.

Delivering government funding schemes: These roles are crucial for delivering government funding schemes, such as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. These schemes, based on PAS 2035 standards, require the expertise of qualified assessors to ensure proper delivery and compliance.

Meeting homeowner demand: There is a growing demand from homeowners to better understand their properties and make informed improvement decisions. These roles address this need and provide essential guidance.

Opportunities for local people: These roles present excellent opportunities for local learners to start successful careers in energy assessment, either as sole traders or by joining established firms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our green skills training caters to anyone looking to fulfil green skills funding requirements or to develop green skills in their local area/community. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Further Education (FE) Providers
  • Higher Education (HE) Providers
  • Local Authorities
  • Social Housing Providers
  • Surveyors
  • Lenders
  • Utility Companies

No previous experience or qualifications are required in order to undergo our DEA training course. Our training course provides learners with all the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to get started in the industry.

We offer flexible training across the UK for our Green Skills Training. You can choose from the following training delivery options:

  • Face-to-face at the Elmhurst Training Centre, Leicestershire.
  • Face-to-face at a venue of your choosing. e.g. your facilities.
  • Live, online via Zoom
  • Live, online via Microsoft Teams
  • Online, on-demand via Elmhurst’s Learning Management System (LMS)

The duration of the training will depend on how the training is delivered (either online or in person).

Typically, the DEA training will take place over a number of days, in order to give learners a solid understanding of the role. Following this, learners will need to undertake on site assessments and test questions in order to complete a professional portfolio (required for qualification).

On average, the process to become fully qualified can take up to 4-6 weeks.

Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs) assess the energy efficiency of existing residential buildings (houses, bungalows and flats) in the UK and produce valid Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).

An assessment can take anywhere between 30 minutes and a few hours, depending on the size and complexity of the property. The assessment will involve the collection of property information (such as  property age, type of windows, type of heating systems, insulation etc), alongside photographic evidence and a floor plan.

This information will be collected and calculated within specialist software (RdSAP), which will provide an energy efficiency rating and produce an EPC.

For more information, watch our short video on ‘A day in the life of a DEA’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYLSn08J5TQ

Retrofit Assessors (RAs) complete retrofit assessments for existing residential buildings in the UK and support homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient. They play a key role in whole house retrofit projects as they collect important property data that Retrofit Coordinators will need in order to develop a retrofit plan.

A retrofit assessment is a non-intrusive on-site assessment, which includes the following:

  • an RdSAP assessment.
  • a detailed floor plan.
  • a condition report, which is a room-by-room assessment that details the overall condition of windows, walls and services.
  • an occupancy assessment, which involves speaking directly with the homeowner to determine how they use the property and what their fuel bills are.

A retrofit assessment will typically take longer to complete in comparison to your standard energy assessment.

Retrofit Assessors will likely work closely with a Retrofit Coordinator, who is essentially the project manager for any whole house retrofit project delivered in accordance with PAS 2035 (the overarching British standard for Retrofitting dwellings for improved energy efficiency).

For more information, watch our short video on ‘A day in the life of a Retrofit Assessor ‘: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfdujbegvZI

PAS 2035 is the overarching British standard for Retrofitting dwellings for improved energy efficiency.

Put simply, it provides specifications and guidance for the retrofit of domestic buildings and details best practice guidance for domestic retrofit projects.

PAS 2035 takes a ‘whole house’ approach, which considers the home, environment, occupancy and the householders’ improvement objectives when determining the most suitable installation measures. It also eliminates the issue of retrofit work being considered in isolation which can unintentionally damage the overall building performance.

Following successful training, learners will have an industry-recognised qualification in Domestic Energy Assessment (and Retrofit Assessment and Older and Traditional Buildings if further training is undertaken) and all necessary skills and knowledge required start a successful career.

Once qualified, learners can either choose to join an existing energy assessment business or become self-employed. They even have the option to do both, by working in their spare time to supplement existing income.

The energy assessment and retrofit industry continues to be a crucial and growing industry, as the UK’s renewed focus on energy efficiency and sustainability continues to drive demand for accredited professionals in this area.
