Elmhurst Energy is getting ready to support the market for ESOS

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme for large undertakings (and their corporate groups). The scheme applies throughout the UK.

Once in effect, ESOS is set to mandate energy audits for over 9000 UK businesses (i.e. large organisations with more than 250 employees or a turnover in excess of €50M and balance sheet assets greater than €43m).  This is particularly good news for Display Energy Certificate (DEC) Assessors and Non Domestic Green Deal Advisors being that both the DEC and the Non Domestic Green Deal Reports will be routes for ESOS compliance.

Amarpal Sihra, Manager for Non Domestic at Elmhurst Energy, comments: “We believe that ESOS will offer an exciting prospect for our members and are applying to hold an approved register of ESOS assessors known as ‘Lead Assessors’. He continues: “The Lead Assessor will be appointed by a business to undertake, lead and review ESOS compliance activity and we believe that Elmhurst Energy is well placed to provide guidance, training and support for the significant market of energy assessors who are likely to get involved.”

ESOS is being implemented in response to legislation from the EU. In complying with ESOS, an energy audit will provide a comprehensive review of energy consumption for a large organisation across all areas of its operations. This will include an analysis of the energy used by buildings, industrial processes and transportation, relating to a period of 12 months. ESOS also requires that cost effective energy improvements are identified and that the audit is revisited with updates or reviews submitted to the Environment Agency on a four-year cycle.
