Have a Unique Selling Point (USP)
It is important to have a USP and make it clear to your customers what it is. Do you specialize in period properties? Are you local? Or are you super-fast at carrying out assessments whilst still maintaining high levels of quality and accuracy? If you have a USP, use it to sell yourself!
Don’t be afraid to let everyone know what you specialize in and why they should choose you as their energy assessor. This is a sure-fire way to differentiate yourself from your competitors and give yourself a bit of an edge.
Free email marketing software
Email marketing is a great way to increase your client list, and give a more professional feel to your emails. Mailchimp is a great piece of email marketing software that you can use to jazz up your emails, and it is free and simple to use.
Using an email marketing software would be beneficial for sending out emails to prospective clients such as estate agents, where you can introduce yourself and your business.
Having an account on social media is a great way to make yourself known whilst building relationships. You can use social media to network with other energy assessors, and make connections with potential clients, such as local estate agents, etc.
You can also use social media to comment on industry news, and explore the opinions of other industry professionals. Additionally, it is a great platform for potential customers to ask questions and make general queries.
Set up a website
Now I know what you’re thinking – where am I supposed to find the time or money to set up a website? But in the digital world we now live in, it is almost a must to have a website, as people often do some research before purchasing a product/service to check that a business is legitimate.
There are a number of free website builders that provide pre-made templates, making it easy to set up your own website. Wix and WordPress are the most widely used website builders, and while everyone has their preference, we would consider Wix to be the easier to use.
Key information you may want to include on your website includes a homepage, about you/your company, reviews/testimonials, what services you offer, and contact information, including a phone number and email. If you are feeling a bit stuck on what to write about, there’s no harm in having a look at the websites of other energy assessment companies to see what information they’ve provided.
Once you have successfully lodged an EPC for a customer and their property, it is a good idea to encourage your customers to leave you a review. You can even contact past customers and ask them to leave you a review if they were happy with your service.
There are a number of places online where you can encourage your customers to leave you reviews, including Google reviews, TrustPilot, your website, and even on your Facebook page or other social media.
Free Directory Listings
Another way to improve your chances of potential customers finding you is to ensure that you’ve added your business to free directories, such as Yelp and Google My Business. When listing your business, you should add your business name, your website, an email address and phone number, a description of what your business does and what services you provide.
You could also provide images relevant to your business, for example, an image of an EPC or images of you conducting an energy assessment.
Introduce yourself to Estate Agents
When you’re first starting out, a great way to get your name out there is to introduce yourself to local estate agents in your area. Letting estate agents know that you’re operating in their area is a good idea because even if they don’t need you immediately, they can retain your details for the future. Many assessors find work through estate agents, as there is always a demand for properties needing an EPC before being let or sold.
