Get the measuring tape right Elmhurst responds to ‘A Future Framework for Heat in Buildings’ call for evidence.
Just before Easter the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) issued a ‘Call for Evidence’ surrounding how the country meets the Government’s commitment to phase out installation of high carbon fossil fuel heating in new and existing buildings off the gas grid, during the 2020s. The Call for Evidence explains what the Government mean by this ambition, and seeks evidence on how they could implement it.
Claire Perry, the Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth states: “This is an ambitious change to the way millions of people heat their homes and businesses and presents a significant market opportunity. However, this is also something that must be done if we are to meet our legally binding carbon targets, improve air quality and ensure that everyone has warm, comfortable home. This call for evidence is the beginning of a long journey, and I am committed to bringing everyone with us.”
Elmhurst have thoroughly digested the details and the questions posed and responded with our official response here.
Stuart Fairlie Technical Director of Elmhurst Energy states: “We welcome the call for evidence on this vitally important aspect of providing heat to all of the UK's buildings moving forward. We stress that to enable good decisions to be made that the ‘measuring tape’ of the policies moving forward are clear from the outset".
All of these are vitally important, but it must be understood that solutions do not always give benefit on all 4 measurements. In fact most energy efficient solutions will benefit one of the measurements, lots will benefit two, only a few will benefit three and very few will ever benefit all four. Once we understand this, we can move forward to deliver better heating systems in the UK. Previous policies have failed to deliver because the objective has been unclear.”
