Everything you need to know about our online APEL OCDEA course
Want to carry out energy assessments from home? Have you got relative industry experience? Well then our online APEL OCDEA course is for you! We talk to Elmhurst OCDEA Team Leader Jason Hewins to find out more.
Hi Jason, what is the APEL route and how does it differ from the standard 4-day course?
The APEL course is a fast-track route for those with industry experience who are looking to become On Construction Domestic Energy Assessors (OCDEAs). The course takes place over 2 days instead of the standard 4 (ABBE course), and skips some of the 'beginner level' content.
What kind of experience do you need?
We ask for 2 of the last 5 years relevant experience, so ideally you should have some knowledge of the building regulations, how dwellings are constructed and be able to take measurements from plans. It doesn't have to be in depth- just an appreciation.
When you send in your application, we'll check whether you have the relevant experience to join the course. However, if you're unsure whether you meet the criteria, or have any questions, feel free to get in contact and we'll be happy to advise you.
What does the course cover?
It covers the Building Regulations, SAP, the use of Design SAP (Elmhurst's software for OCDEAs), and producing compliance reports and EPCs.
It's a very hands-on course because we want to ensure that everyone is comfortable using the software, so there's a lot of time dedicated to using Design SAP. Usually we would provide everyone with a laptop for the class but, as this is an online course, we'll make sure everyone has the software installed on their computer before the session.
Are there any tests?
Once you have finished the course, you will need to complete five test cases as part of your portfolio. The test cases will be marked by the team and, providing you have completed the tests correctly, you will receive your OCDEA qualification.
You'll get free access to the trial version of Design SAP to complete your test cases (usual price £195 plus VAT) and if you run into any difficulties, our support team are always on hand to help you out.
Is there anything you need to do before the course?
No, there's no pre-course reading or anything like that. I think the main thing to have sorted is the software, but I wouldn't worry too much about that - we've got an expert technical support team who can help you.
How does the day run for an online course?
The day will run from 9:30am - 4pm, but don't worry, you'll have breaks! You can also set up your classroom as you wish, be it the livingroom, office or whichever part of the house is free.
The course is delivered online so it goes without saying you will require an internet connection for both days.
How do you book a course?
You book an OCDEA APEL course by visiting the training calendar.
It's also worth mentioning that we've got a training discount at the moment, whereby you'll save £100 if you book this course before 31st May.
