ESOS to Remain a 'Fixed Point' in the Business Energy Tax Landscape
Two weeks ago George Osborne released the annual budget, which announced a review of the business energy tax landscape, to consider approaches to simplify and improve the effectiveness of the regime. This announcement caused a bit of a stir within the industry, as it implied that changes could be made to the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS).
The Conservative government is obviously committed to reducing the burden of legislation on business however the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) have written to Elmhurst Energy and other stakeholders to say categorically:
"For the avoidance of doubt, ESOS is a ‘fixed point’ in the landscape, mandated by the EU. Given that the Government has not ‘gold-plated’ implementation of ESOS, we do not consider that there is scope for further simplification of it at this time, and businesses that are required to comply with ESOS can be confident that the requirements for compliance are not about to change."
Elmhurst Energy will continue to lobby for effective implementation of energy saving legislation, and working with both DECC and DCLG in its delivery and enforcement.
